For many e-commerce websites the holiday season is the busiest time of the year.

In 2021 some businesses closed their physical stores and had to adapt their marketing strategies. For many e-commerce websites, the holiday season is the busiest time of the year.

The holiday season formally begins with Black Friday & Cyber Monday and leads up to a few December holidays, including Christmas. In my experience, it’s never too early to start planning for it. As more and more customers shop online, the planning phase is arguably the most important part of a successful season.


Creating a magical holiday marketing strategy may seem extremely daunting and overwhelming, but don’t let that discourage you from getting to it. It doesn’t need to be an overcomplicated or overly analysed masterpiece, just stick to the basics.

1. Audit previous holiday campaigns

Look back at statistics from previous years to understand where you got it right and where you can improve on. Taking the time to analyse your previous years will help avoid making the same mistakes again.

In addition to performance statistics, consider looking at your current customer data. Has your customer changed over the past year? What is your current main demographics? What do they value? Having full knowledge of who your ideal customer is, will help you craft a holiday campaign that they will resonate with.

2. Identify holiday marketing strategies that will fit your audience

No holiday marketing messages are created equal. Don’t simply mirror your competitors’ strategies. The key to a successful holiday marketing campaign lies in knowing your target audience.

If you have a younger audience, like Gen Z or Millenials, consider amping up your social commerce efforts to share special offers or holiday promotions. If you have an older audience offer order online with a pick-up in store.

3. Make sure you and your online platforms can handle the increase in sales

There is nothing worse than taking the time to create & set up a stellar marketing campaign, rolling everything out than to find that your website can’t handle the increased traffic.

Also, consider if you’ll be able to offer the product & service at a reasonable delivery time. You don’t want to disappoint clients by not being able to deliver on time as this will have an impact on your business in the future.

4. Don’t forget about Email Marketing

If you know the saying or not, I am going to remind you. The money lies in the list.

Email marketing remains the most effective marketing tool.  It has almost become a classic by now. Email marketing remains popular because it is simple, accessible for businesses of any size and measurable.


1. Free products and services are always a hit

When offering promos during holidays, always consider giving something for free. Some of the free products that you can give are:

  • Free product with every bundle
  • Free points for every purchase. This is especially good because it will encourage shoppers to buy from your store in the future.
  • Free gift cards and coupons when they interact with your social media posts or email campaigns.
  • Free shipping
  • Free gift wrapping

2. Create interactive campaigns

You can create interactive campaigns for your customers. You can try the following campaigns to attract visitors and customers to your website or online store:

  • Quizzes. Make it about Christmas or New Year.
  • Surveys or Polls. Create a poll or survey on your social media about the gifts that they can purchase from your store.
  • Contests. Create a contest that gives prizes for certain actions. It can be liking or sharing a post.

Interactive campaigns like these are always a great way to attract customers. Make sure to plan all the prizes accordingly to avoid problems.

3. Keep your customers coming with Flash Deals

It is one of the best holiday marketing campaign tactics that plays with mystery and users’ curiosity. In a nutshell, to keep customers coming back, create a campaign that offers flash deals at fixed hours or every day.

Offering a 10-20% discount will generate some buzz, but the most successful flash sales offer deep discounts.

4. Redesign your online store

Redesigning your website is one of the ways to improve your digital marketing strategies. This is the first thing that you should be doing. Join the festive spirit by adding some festive cheer to your website.

This will help attract customers that are doing their holiday shopping. Images like gifts and Christmas themed colours are recommended. Just make sure that the designs are well incorporated and will not clash with your brand design.
